Thatched cottages have long been an iconic symbol of Old Ireland, often consisting of one or two simple rooms, heated by the turf fire. The thatched roof was made from the reeds that grow so plentifully about Ireland's rivers and lakes. They provide waterproof and long lasting protection from the soft Irish weather. Often lasting well over 50 years.
