The Celtic Cross
When Christianity came to Ireland in the 5th century many of the Celtic standing stones and water springs were replaced with Celtic Crosses and holy wells or even churches. Much of the symbolism of the Celts was adapted into the Christian traditions. The distinctive circle around the cross is thought to have symbolised the sun, which was an essential element in the belief system of pre-Christian Ireland.
